The National Junior Honor Society is the United States’ premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students (6-9th grade). More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.
Students are invited to apply for membership to NJHS at the end of their sixth grade year. Students must demonstrate a minimum average of an 87 percent; present two letters of recommendation and interview for acceptance into NJHS. When accepted, members are expected to maintain high academic standards, serve as positive role models to their peers and participate in a minimum of 6 hours of community service per quarter.

More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
